The difference only comes from where they are used and how they are used. When you take a close look at non-studded tyres, one thing that you will notice is that they do not have the metal studs that studded tyres have. They are made from special rubber and have a tread design to provide better traction on snowy roads. When it gets too cold outside, the special rubber that these tyres feature allows them to remain flexible and provide improved traction on the road.



Another thing that you will notice when you look at non-studded tyres are tiny slits in the tread pattern. These slits are called sipes and play a similar role as the metal studs that are found on the studded tyres. When you are driving on an ice packed road, the sipes will dig into that ice and help you remain stable on the road. You will be able to stay on the road better even if it has thick layers of ice. But in some cases, you may need to resort to studded tyres because they perform better than the studless tyres on ice.

Since there are two types of winter tyres to choose from, the question you may be asking yourself right now is which one is better. There is no one simple answer to this question because both studded and non-studded tyres are meant for different situations. If you come from a place where there is a lot of ice on roads in winter, the studded tyres will be the better choice.
